Biography

Dr Becker is a Professor of Psychology and a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the development and testing of body image programs. She also specializes in the treatment and prevention of eating disorders and treatment of PTSD. Dr. Becker’s work primarily focuses on getting scientifically-supported programs out into the real world so that more people have access to them. She is Co-Director of the Body Project Collaborative, a social entrepreneurship company which she co-founded to specifically improve access to the Body Project body image program. She is the author of numerous journal articles, and has spent over a decade conducting NIMH-funded research with female athletes. She is considered a leader in the delivery of peer-led body image programs, and she and her amazing female undergraduate students pioneered a blended task-shifting/train-the-trainers approach to scaling the Body Project. This approach to delivery of the Body Project has now been used by over 150 universities in North America, as well as numerous non-profit partner organizations around the globe. Dr. Becker is a member of the Eating Disorder Research Society, and is board certified in behavioral and cognitive psychology. She also is a Fellow of both the Academy for Eating Disorders and the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. She is a past president of the Academy of Eating Disorders and the current president-elect of the Society for a Science of Clinical PsychologyIn 2009, she was a co-recipient of the Academy for Eating Disorders’ Research-Practice Partnership Award. Dr. Becker also was the 2009 recipient of the Lori Irving Award for Excellence in Eating Disorders Prevention and Awareness granted by the National Eating Disorders Association, and was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University from 2011-2012. In 2012 she received the Z.T. Scott Faculty Fellowship award for outstanding teaching and advising at Trinity University. In 2017 she was named a Piper Professor by the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation in recognition of outstanding achievement. Dr. Becker has received press coverage from CNN, the New York Times, Time, US News & World Report and the Wall Street Journal.
